Founded by Patricia Hodges, Ms. Patricia’s School of Dance and Gymnastics is more than just a place to learn dance and gymnastics—it’s a second home for many students. Born and raised in Byron, Patricia always knew she had a passion for movement and dance. “I wanted to share my love of dance and gymnastics with others by making a positive impact on their lives,” she shares. And that’s exactly what she’s done.
Since opening its doors, Ms. Patricia’s has welcomed students as young as 18 months old all the way through college, offering a range of classes, including ballet, tap, pointe, jazz/hip-hop, gymnastics, and competitive cheer. But the lessons learned at the studio go beyond technique. “Our goal is to build confidence, self-esteem, character, discipline, physical fitness, and leadership qualities that students will carry with them no matter what path they choose,” Patricia explains.
Growth, Challenges, and Resilience
The journey of Ms. Patricia’s School of Dance and Gymnastics has been one of growth and perseverance. What started with just two classrooms in an old school building has now expanded into a state-of-the-art studio built 10 years ago on Main Street. Through the years, Patricia has relied on word-of-mouth to grow her business, and she treasures the moments when people recognize her as “Ms. Patricia” because of the impact she has made in the community.
However, the road hasn’t always been easy. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the studio had to close for six months, leaving Patricia uncertain about the future. “We basically had to rebuild our program from the ground up,” she recalls. But in the face of adversity, she remembered why she started: the students. Their passion and dedication fueled her determination to reopen, and today, the studio continues to thrive.
The Heart of the Studio: Family and Balance
Running a business while balancing family life is no small feat, but Patricia and her husband, who also owns his own business, have mastered the art of teamwork. The studio operates Monday through Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings, but Patricia’s work doesn’t stop there. When she’s not teaching classes, Patricia manages paperwork, plans out upcoming seasons, and prepares for recitals.
In addition to her work at the studio, Patricia also dedicates time to teaching senior citizens at a local gym. “This really has been a blessing to me, knowing I am helping them live a longer productive life,” she shares.
Looking Ahead
As the studio continues to grow, Patricia remains committed to her mission – to fill up classes and celebrate every student’s achievements. Whether a child dreams of becoming a skilled dancer or simply wants to build confidence, Ms. Patricia’s School of Dance and Gymnastics is a place where dreams truly do come true.
Her advice to aspiring business owners? “Don’t give up on your dreams. Keep putting in the work to achieve your goals. Stick to your vision, and don’t let someone else’s opinion change that.”
